While your loading docks are stationary and don't change, the variety of trucks and trailers that you might encounter using your docks are great. At some point you will encounter a truck or trailer that doesn't line up with your loading dock, making freight movement difficult, if not impossible. What you need are loading dock levelers, otherwise referred to as dock levelers or pit levelers. These pit levelers come in a variety of configurations depending on what sorts of loads you receive and how often they get used.
The first aspect to consider when determining the the right pit levelers for your loading dock is deciding if you want a manually operated pit leveler or if you want a hydraulic pit leveler, or you may look at the air bag pit leveler as an alternative. If you are dealing with lighter loads and/or less frequent use of the pit leveler, the manually operated pit levelers may be a cost-effective choice. These manual pit levelers feature a pull chain to release the pit leveler platform and raise the lip projection to connect the loading dock with the truck or trailer.
When you find that you are dealing with a dock leveler more frequently throughout the day, it becomes an efficiency issue where you will want to have a hydraulic dock leveler. This saves your employees the strain of having to pull the chain multiple times a shift to make the manual dock leveler operate. Additionally, these hydraulic dock levelers can handle higher load weights, making them a necessity when you have heavier loads. Hydraulic dock levelers will be the workhorse of your loading dock.
Your loading dock leveler is vital to the continued operation of your warehouse. The option to go with an air bag loading dock leveler has a number of advantages for you. First, you eliminate the manual nature of your loading dock leveler, so it becomes easier for your employees to use the equipment and keep them safe. Additionally, the air bag system doesn't use hydraulic fluid so your loading dock leveler won't get fouled with hydraulic fluid. Third, the air bag for your loading dock leveler provides a large surface area that it uses to lift the loading dock leveler, unlike the hydraulic dock leveler which has a single point of pressure, which may not work for all load types.
