If you have a loading dock, but don't have the room to put in a loading dock pit, or it's just too expensive to tear out your old loading docks and replace it with a loading dock pit, what should you do? You can turn to edge of dock levelers! Edge levelers or top of dock levelers are the solution when you have limited space, light to medium loads, and average to heavy traffic. Edge of dock levelers, edge levelers and top of dock levelers are more economical and less complicated to install than pit levelers. Edge levelers, edge of dock levelers and top of dock levelers are available in standard capacities up to 35,000 pounds, with standard widths of between 66 and 84 inches wide.
Basic edge levelers start with manual levelers that are manipulated with a lever and assisted with springs. They provide nearly a foot of range between trucks and trailers that are higher or lower than your loading dock, going up to 5 inches above and 5 inches below dock. These edge levelers can also come with integrated bump blocks to help protect the edge leveler against being damaged.
Edge of dock levelers also feature steel gussets which provide 30,000 pounds of structural support when in the closed position. Many edge of dock levelers feature an integrated, self-storing handle, and also move back to the stored position once a truck or trailer pulls away from the dock. Rotary Products also features a special edge of dock leveler that is specifically designed for low height loading docks. These edge of dock levelers mount above your existing dock height and have an integrated ramp for seamless transition from dock to truck or trailer. While many edge of dock levelers are manual in operation, there are a few options that feature a hydraulic system run with solid-state technology for easy activation, as well as a fully automatic return feature.
Top of dock levelers are ideal for situations where working range requirements exceed those provided by edge of dock levelers and there is no existing pit to use a pit leveler. The top of dock levelers feature a working range of up to 10 inches above and 4 inches below dock height. These top of dock levelers also have a hydraulic piston to move the tread-plate deck. There is no special concrete work required.
